Edward II

Edward II 6.9

The film is based on the famous British dramatist Christopher Marlowe's play of the same name. In the 16th century, the king of England snubbed the queen and openly carried out all kinds of shocking acts of love with his same-sex lover, which made the rule of the whole kingdom collapse and face disintegration. The prescient queen finally resorted to ruthless tactics to prevent the disaster from coming and described the film as "highly conceptualized" and still could not accurately express its complexity. Jarman rewrote the plays of Christopher Marlowe in the 16th century from the perspective of modern gender politics. The story revolves around King Edward's openly homosexual behavior, not in a luxurious historical setting, with bare walls, dirty floors and fashionable actors. Jarman also fully explored all the subtext of homosexuality in Marlowe's original work and focused on it. He uses the original dialogue, but mixes the dramatic story with contemporary repression of homosexuality and gay struggle. There is no exact age in the film, and most of the time the situations of different ages are intertwined.
