In postwar Japan, four retired geisha maintained their relationship in another way and appreciated the loneliness of life. Sunji (Haruko Sugimura) was entangled between a number of men when she was young, and even today, her lover still interrupts her life. Shouji, who is alone, lends usury to her former sisters, covering up some loss with a mean attitude. Yinmei and Yuhui share a room and have a son and a daughter respectively. Now Yingmei is addicted to gambling and Yuhui is ill, so she has to endure the taunts of Xuji. When their children get married and travel far away, Yingmei and Yuhui feel lonely and miserable for a time, so they can only drown their sorrows by drinking. Xuji can not forget the lover Tanabe (Uehara Qian) to visit, but this middle-aged man has not been in high spirits, will the last hope ignited by Xuji be disillusioned? This film is based on the writer Lin Fumiko's three novels and ranks seventh among the top 10 of the year.
