In postwar Japan, four retired geisha maintained their relationship in another way and appreciated the loneliness of life. Sunji (Haruko Sugimura) was entangled between a number of men when she was young, and even today, her lover still interrupts her life. Shouji, who is alone, lends usury to her former sisters, covering up some loss with a mean attitude. Yinmei and Yuhui share a room and have a son and a daughter respectively. Now Yingmei is addicted to gambling and Yuhui is ill, so she has to endure the taunts of Xuji. When their children get married and travel far away, Yingmei and Yuhui feel lonely and miserable for a time, so they can only drown their sorrows by drinking.
