The story takes place in the humanistic ancient city of Rome. Mauro (Michelle Picoli Michel Piccoli) and Marda (Anouk Aimei Anouk Aimee) are brother and sister who depend on each other. They are both single, and Malda suffers from severe depression. Seeing his sister increasingly crazy and haggard, Mauro was desperate to kill. He took advantage of his position to find a murderer named Thea Paula (Michelle Placido Michele Placido). He used his acquittal as bait to hand his sister over to Thea Paula in the hope that the latter could drop the butcher's knife instead of him. What Mauro did not expect is that instead of killing Marda, she had a romantic relationship with her, and Malda recovered and became a happy woman again. Watching his sister and Thea Paula go out together, the deep loneliness plunged Mauro into despair.
