The story takes place in St. Louis, USA, where Tom (John Markovich John Malkovich) lives a life of mutual dependence with his mother Amanda (Joana Woodward Joanne Woodward) and sister Laura (Karen Alan Karen Allen). Laura was disabled in her legs and could not go out to work. Her mother was so weak that she could only earn a meagre income by making phone calls.
