The film begins in October 1959, and according to breaking news, Hollywood star Flynn (Kevin Klein) has just died. He died in the arms of his lover, Beverly (Dakota Fanning), a 17-year-old film star. More surprisingly, Beverly's mother Florence (Susan Sarandon) not only knows but also allows the relationship, which has been going on for two years. The film then recreates the story through Florence's memories and dictation to reporters.
