While working in a cosmetics factory in Machimachi, Machida Machiko (Chiba Chieko) lived a comfortable life with her father, grandmother and two younger brothers. Her boyfriend Michio (Tayatsu Hayakawa) dreamed of finding a paid job and settling down in the suburbs, but Makiko Machida began to question whether middle-class life would really bring her happiness.
