After World War II, American writer Martin (Joseph Cotten) was invited by his friend Harry (Orson Welles) to work in Vienna. Unexpectedly, as soon as he arrived at his destination, news of Harry's death in a car accident came. At Harry's funeral, Martin met local officer Calloway. Calloway rudely asked him to leave Vienna immediately. Martin ignored it and determined to stay and find out the truth about his friend's death. Martin finds Harry's girlfriend, Miss Scomte (Alida Valli), to investigate the truth of the incident. As the investigation deepened, they discovered that the inside story became more and more complicated. First, their landlord was killed, and then Martin himself discovered that he was being followed, and he found out that there was a third person present when Harry died. Therefore, the key is to find this mysterious third person.
