This is a fantasy work by director Frantisek Vlacil, and his previous film "Heroes of gone with the Wind" topped the list of Czech movies. Set in the 13th century, this primitive and powerful epic tells the story of the Brotherhood between the 12-year-old boy Ondrej and the Germanic knights to reflect the competition and conflict between Christianity and pagans. The cold images in the film are reminiscent of Eisenstein's masterpiece Alexander Nevsky. The characters in the film are destroyed by erotic relationships, including "legal" incest and unknown homosexuals.
