The story begins in the countryside of Wyoming, where our protagonist Wyerp (Kevin Costner Kevin Costner) was born. In order to take part in the Civil War to serve his country, Wyell ran away from home and bravely rushed to the front, but was refused to join the army because of his age. After that, Wyerp began to study law and met a woman named Uriella (Betty Buckley Betty Buckley). Soon after they both fell in love, they walked into the wedding hall hand in hand. However, the happy days did not last long, and a serious illness took Urilla's life, leaving Wyerp in despair and self-abandonment. Just as he is on the verge of collapse, his father Nicholas (Gene Hackman Gene Hackman) comes to him and leads Wyerp back to the right path.
