Chaplin made his first film for first National Pictures, which was three volumes long. In this film, Chaplin makes an interesting contrast between the life of the homeless and the life of the dog, who struggles to survive and endures kicking them from all walks of life. Chaplin began to think about the structure of comedy from this film, and each paragraph is related to each other to form a whole. Because of its complete structure, there are tears in the comedy that still shows the homeless Charlotte being chased around by the police in the slums and hotels.
