The protagonist of the film (Emile Johnning Emil Jannings) is the janitor of a big hotel. He has always been proud of this decent job. When he returned to the slum where he lived after work in a flamboyant uniform, his neighbors would cast an envious look at him. A new day began, but when he went to work as usual, he was told that his boss would fire him because he was too old. But for the sake of his years of work, the boss transferred him to clean the toilet and took back his Phnom Penh uniform. He suddenly changed from an arrogant janitor to a lowly toilet cleaner. Unable to accept this fact, he sneaked into the hotel at night and stole his uniform back. He wore his uniform to his niece's wedding without telling his friends and relatives about the transfer. Soon, his secret was known by others, and everyone laughed at him. He no longer had the face to face others, so he ran back to the hotel to return his uniform and sat lost in the toilet. However, the story does not end there. The film is adapted from Gogol's novel the Coat.
