The story takes place in 1946, when the devastated land has not yet recovered from the haze of war that has just gone away, and Stalin announces an amnesty for Russians who fled the country during the war, so Alex (Oleg Mitchikov Oleg Menshikov) returns to the embrace of the motherland with his French wife Marie (Sandrine Bernell Sandrine Bonnaire) and son. It was not long before the family came back to usher in the Iron Curtain era. The government claimed that 90% of the aliens returning home were agents sent by the enemy, so they launched a rigorous investigation. Under great pressure, there was a serious disagreement between Alex, who advocated compromise, and Mary, who wanted to embark on a journey on the run. In the end, Mary was arrested and locked up in a concentration camp, six years later. Six years later, Mary returned to Alex. However, the once wise and intelligent woman had long since ceased to exist, only a scarred shell and a fragile dark heart.
