After receiving the news of his father's death, Prince Hamlet of Denmark (Mel Gibson Mel Gibson) hurried back to his country. After returning, Hamlet found that everything around him had changed dramatically. Uncle Claudius (Alan Bates Alan Bates) succeeded to the throne, while his mother Gertrude (Glenn Clos Glenn Close) became the queen of Claudius. The appearance of the ghost of his father (Paul Scofield Paul Scofield) makes Hamlet more convinced that all this, including his father's death, was done deliberately by Claudius, and that Hamlet did not hesitate to pretend to be stupid in order to get revenge, so as to escape the persecution of Claudius. In an accident, Hamlet mistakenly kills his lover Ophelia (Helena Bonham Carter Helena Bonham Carter)'s father Polonius (Ian Holm Ian Holm). Ophelia falls into the river and drowns, and Gertrude also dies. In the end, the grief and indignation of Hamlet pointed the blade at Claudius.
