Hugh (Roddy McDowell Roddy McDowall) was born in a miner's home, where his father Morgan Sr. (Donald Crisp Donald Crisp) and his brothers do the hardest and most dangerous work in the dark and hot underground. Even so, Hugh's childhood was full of happy memories. His father's optimistic attitude infected a large family, and everyone cherished the good time he had with his family. The closure of the steel plant plunged the Morgan family into crisis, and a large number of steel workers poured into the coal mining industry, resulting in a sharp drop in wages for coal miners. The disgruntled miners decided to go on strike, including the sons of old Morgan. Morgan was opposed to this radical move. He had a fierce conflict with his sons, who chose to run away from home. Fortunately, the strike had a positive effect, and the Morgan family got back on track.
