Matt (Tom Wilkinson Tom Wilkinson) and Ruth (Cece Spacek Sissy Spacek) are a couple who have been married for many years. They have a son Frank (Nick Starr Nick Stahl) under their knees, and the family of three are very close. However, one thing that bothers Matt and Ruth for a long time is that his son Frank falls in love with a woman she shouldn't have fallen in love with-Natalie (Marissa Tomei Marisa Tomei). Not only is the beautiful and sexy Natalie much older than Frank, she is followed by two children, and to make matters worse, Natalie is not officially divorced from her husband Richard (William McBose William Mapother). They are just separated, while Richard is the town's notorious scoundrel and villain. Matt and Ruth's fears were soon verified, and sure enough, Richard found Natalie and Frank.
