William Bowylet's family is celebrating his 90th birthday in Berlin in the early autumn of 1989. William, a former resistance fighter, who has been abroad, firmly believes in Stalinism. Although the outside world is coming, his wife Charlotte is still holding a birthday party to maintain the peace at home. However, William's little grandson Sasha disappeared at this juncture-no one could have thought that Sasha had fled to West Berlin a few days ago. The film unfolds slowly from the perspective of Sasha's father, historian Kurt, and starts with the disintegration of a family, showing the "afterglow" of the end of the former East German rule in the late 1980s.
