Jean Valjean (Liam Neeson) faces 20 years in prison for stealing bread. After being released by Sheriff Javert (Geoffrey Rush), his status as a prisoner has hit many obstacles. The desperate Jean Valjean is taken in by the kind bishop (Peter Vaughan). Jean Valjean stole the bishop's silver and attempted to abscond. After being arrested, the bishop falsely claimed that the silver was a gift he had given to Jean Valjean. This action by the bishop completely influenced Jean Valjean, and he decided to clean up his mind and live a good life. Ten years later, Jean Valjean became the mayor of the town incognito and met Fantine (Uma Thurman), a female worker with a tragic fate. Jean Valjean promises Fantine, who is dying, that he will take care of her young daughter Cosette (Claire Danes). At the same time, Javert, who has been tracking Jean Valjean, also notices the mayor's true identity.
