Lily (Leslie Cullen Leslie Caron), a lovely 16-year-old girl, leaves her hometown alone to realize her dream, but who knows the person she wanted to go to died in an accident. The homeless Lily meets a magician named Mark (Jean-Pierre Ormont Jean-Pierre Aumont). Mark takes Lily in and arranges her to perform in his own performing group. Paul (Mel Feller Mel Ferrer) is a puppeteer. When he meets Lily, he creates an ingenious way to perform with the puppet she manipulates. Such a novel performance was soon warmly welcomed by the audience, and the performing troupe became an instant hit. Lily adored Mark painstakingly, but Mark didn't take Lily to heart. Paul, who witnessed all this, dared to hide behind the scenes and express his love through his puppet.
