The story takes place in France in 1977. Robert (Fabricius Fabrice Luchini) is a very autocratic factory owner who is not only strict with his workers, but also an out-and-out "big man" in his family. The long-standing oppression culminated in the angry cries of workers, who staged large-scale strikes and demonstrations, demanding fewer jobs and higher wages, and forcing Robert to step down. At this juncture, Robert's usually unknown wife Suzanne (Catherine Deneuve Catherine Deneuve) comes forward, not only using her flexible social skills to appease the workers' anger, but even let them obediently return to their respective jobs. Under Suzanne's leadership, the factory resumed production and the working conditions of the workers improved. However, Robert, who was recuperating out of town, knew nothing about all this.
