Albert (ke Gr ö nberg) gambles all his life on his painstaking circus. Although his business is getting worse, he has no idea of giving up. He decides to use a big performance to boost the morale of the troupe. With his lover Anne (Harriet Anderson Harriet Andersson), Albert comes to a man named Schuberg (Gunnar Buenstland Gunnar Bj ö rnstrand), hoping to borrow some costumes for the show. Albert goes to see his long-separated wife Agda (Annika Tretow) and children, and expresses his desire to stay at home for his twilight years, but he is turned down. Soon after, Albert discovers that Anne and her colleague Frans (Hasse Ekmen Hasse Ekman) are having an affair. Fortunately, the performance of the circus was a success, and even though life was cruel, the days slowly passed by day by day.
