Daughter Emma (Deborah Wenger Debra Winger) is the darling of her mother Aurora (Shirley MacLean Shirley MacLaine). Since childhood, Aurora has arranged everything for Emma. Emma's speech and manners, dressing up, studying, playing, making friends and so on must be approved by Aurora. After her husband's early death, Aurora took charge of the family and became more "autocratic" to Emma. Although Emma shows that she is gentle and weak, she is very stubborn at heart. As a result, the two mother and daughter quarreled many times. Aurora never accepted the pursuit of other men, and Emma grew up snuggling up with her mother. When she grew up, Emma began to try her best to get rid of her mother's "autocracy": despite her mother's opposition, she married a graduate student with an unstable job. It took her 30 years to get rid of her mother's "autocracy", but in the end she found herself unforgettable to her mother.
