Playboy Alan (Maurice Ronnett Maurice Ronet) has been sober for six months in a nursing home. The recuperation is coming to an end, but he is not sure whether he will recover. He soothed his fears and sorrows by reading books, smoking, keeping diaries, playing with pistols and cutting and pasting newspaper reports about death. He is separated from his American wife and is entangled with his wife's friend Lydia (Jeanne Moreau). Lydia asked Alan to have a showdown with his wife and live with her, but Alan refused. Back in the nursing home, Alan, encouraged by the doctor, decided to try to reintegrate into society and get in touch with his friends. In Paris, he began to visit his former friends, only to find that nowadays people have all betrayed their former social and political views and become artificial, and no one can understand him or even ridicule him. The positive belief that Alan had just kindled in his heart was completely destroyed. he could not hide his dislike of the world and fell into despair again. Alan got himself drunk for the last time, woke up, packed his room and luggage, answered a phone call and finished reading a Fitzroger novel.
