After falling apart with his wife, newspaper writer Felix (Jack Lemon Jack Lemmon) is driven out of the house. In desperation, he has to move to the residence of his friend Oscar (Walter Matthew Walter Matthau) and become a roommate with his long-time acquaintance. The personalities of Oscar and Felix are ice and fierce. the former is eccentric and withdrawn and often makes a mess of the house, while the latter is a nice guy who likes cleaning and cooking. Although the two people in "cohabitation" often quarrel over trifles, their lives are alive because of each other's existence, and a pair of sisters from England who live next door give them endless fantasies. Under the strong opposition of Oscar, Felix still invited the two sisters to his home. Unexpectedly, the four of them got along well with each other. When things went towards the ideal direction, Oscar refused to continue. The mad Felix was furious. The friendship between the two friends is in jeopardy.
