Women wait anxiously in a mine in Cabo Daso, Sicily. Their men are underground. The mine is closing and the miners refuse to come up unless the owner lets go. Three days later, they gave up in despair. Ciccio is recruiting workers in France in a bar in the town. He can get people across the border-just L20000. There are enough people to fill the bus to sell their property to pay for it, including Sarro and his three children, as well as Barbara and her man Vanni, who ran into legal trouble and fled Italy in despair. After arriving in Naples by train, Ciccio tried to slip away but was caught by Vanni. Vanni told Barbara where to meet at the border if anything was wrong. In Rome, Ciccio pointed out Vanni to the police. In the shootout, Fanny and Cicio both escaped. Others were arrested. The police ordered them to return to Sicily or were charged with "illegal emigration". With Saro as the leader, they ran out of money and headed north. The difficulty brought Sarro and Barbara closer together.
