The mechanic Frank (Jack Nicholson Jack Nicholson) is penniless and is taken in by Nick, a Greek shopkeeper in a small town near Los Angeles. Nick's young wife Cora (Jessica Lange) arouses Frank's strong interest. Cora is also tired of drunken Greeks. The two soon have a relationship while Nick is in town and decide to elope, but Frank's gambling nature forces the plan to change. Cora wanted to kill the drunken Nick but only seriously injured him.
