This film is based on Milan Kundera's novel of the same name. In 1968, Prague surgeon Thomas (Daniel Day-Lewis Daniel Day-Lewis) lives in the pursuit of women, enjoying the pleasure of sex. Painter Sabina (Lena Olin Lena Olin) is Thomas's confidant, but during a visit to a spa, Thomas meets waitress Teresa (Juliet Binoche Juliette Binoche). Soon after, Teresa came to Prague alone and the couple got married. Thomas still did not change the bad habit of having an affair with Sabina or other women after marriage. Teresa could not stand Thomas's infidelity and ran away late at night when the Soviet Union invaded the Czech Republic. The trio fled to Geneva, Switzerland, where Sabina met the local university professor Franz (Drake Delint Derek de Lint). Teresa lost her job and returned to Prague alone with her dog Karenin. How on earth should Thomas choose between freedom and restraint? This film is one of the top ten films in the United States in 1988.
