Aunt accidental death, to the beautiful, kind girl Paula (Ingrid Bergman Ingrid Bergman) left a large legacy, attracted malevolent young Anton (Charles Boyer Charles Boyer) coveted. After pursuing Paula successfully, the two returned to live in the old London house where Aunt Paula was killed. Paula, who thought she had a perfect husband and a happy life, was gradually plagued by strange phenomena. She always heard strange noises, things often disappeared and reappeared inexplicably, the new maid was contemptuous of her, and the gas lights began to flicker and dim.
