Mr. Verdu (Charlie Chaplin Charles Chaplin) used to be a bank clerk, living a calm but happy life with his wife Mona (Mady Correll) and son Peter (Allison Roddan). With the arrival of the Great Depression, Mr. Verdu lost his job, and with a family to support, he had nowhere to live on the streets. By chance, Mr. Verdu got a kind of magical poison, which was able to be invisible, possessed this "murder weapon", and a wonderful plan was born in his mind. Soon, rich but mindless women such as Selma (Helene Heigh), Lydia (Margaret Hoffman) and Gronet (Isobel Elsom Isobel Elsom) became the souls of Mr. Verdu, and their large fortune went to Mr. Verdu's pocket.
