The plot depicts Paul, a young miner, who is quiet and sensitive. His mother, GE Chu, turns to her son for love because she is at odds with her husband, who often drinks too much. This situation affected Paul's relationship with his girlfriend Miriam. Because of the strict religious values of her family, Miriam only wanted to pursue spiritual love and rejected physical enthusiasm. In order to get rid of his mother's control and the emotional blow of his girlfriend, Paul fell into the arms of Clara, a female worker separated from her husband, but soon found that the two lacked spiritual communication. In the end, Paul abandoned the monotonous coal mining town and went to a different place. The British literary film based on D.H. Lawrence's original autobiographical novel, directed by Jack Cardiff, a distinguished photographer, won an Oscar for best photography. The film depicts Paul's complex state of mind with great delicacy, and Dean Stockwell, Trevor Howard and Wendy Shiller also perform well.
