The Edge of Democracy

The Edge of Democracy 7.1

Brazil was once paralyzed by a military dictatorship. In 1985, Brazil established the foundation of democracy. In 2002, Brazil elected a very popular political subverter: Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, a steelworker turned activist. Under his leadership, 20 million Brazilians were lifted out of poverty and his country rose to international fame. In 2010, Lula passed the presidential baton to his successor, a ferocious female guerrilla named Dilma Rousseff. But behind their sunny legacy, the uproar of populist anger and institutional corruption spread to the mainstream, mostly egged on by a party judge who provided the news media with sensational and seriously flawed corruption reports aimed at Lula, Dilma and others who refused to curry favor with powerful politicians and special interests. Through very close contact, the Edge of Democracy follows Brazil's embattled leader.
