In 1861, Johnnie Gray (Buster Keaton) is an employee of the Western Atlantic Railway Company, deeply in love with his train, the General, and his fiancee (Marion Mack). When the Civil War broke out, his fiancee asked him to join the army, but the military refused him, believing that it would be more valuable for him to drive a train. His fiancee was very angry and vowed never to speak to him again unless she saw him in a military uniform. The Union Army was planning a plot to seize the General and launch a surprise attack for the Confederates. Johnnie discovered the Union's trick and unexpectedly rescued his fiancee from the Union camp. He had to bring information about the Union's raid back to the Confederate position. He drove the General along the way and encountered heavy pursuits. The war between the North and South armies is imminent...
