Victoria, who was mistakenly thought to have died in a Nazi concentration camp, survived and went to San Francisco to see her "son", whose grandmother died and left him a large legacy. Victoria fell in love with Alan Spender, the boy's property trustee, and they moved to live in a big house in Telegraph Hill.
