Gangori, an Indian youth, was reading a Gogol novel on the train. An old man with the same company advised him to travel abroad, when the train had an accident. Gangori, who survived the disaster, went to the United States to study, and then, brokered by his family, tied the knot with the beautiful Indian girl Ashma (Tabu), and the two went to live in the United States, but Ashma was often troubled by homesickness. Gangori felt that his second life came from Gogol, so he named his first child after the Russian writer. As time flies, Gogol (Kal Penn) grows into a strong young man who doesn't understand his father's motivation for naming himself. After a family trip back to India, Gogol decided on his professional direction, became an architect and had a white girlfriend. In this family of first-generation Indian immigrants, each member has to face cultural differences and their own positioning. The film is based on a novel of the same name by the Indian-American writer Jhumpa Lahiri.
