The Berkmans are facing a family crisis. Dad Bernard (Jeff Daniels Jeff Daniels) career is in decline, once a best-selling writer, he has now become obscure, but his wife Joan (Laura Linny Laura Linney) is now famous in writing, which makes Bernard feel lagged behind, and choose to face his wife's success with a sarcastic face, the two have to face the end of marriage breakdown. The two sons are bound to be troubled by the relationship between their parents. The eldest son Walter (Jesse Eisenberg Jesse Eisenberg) is 16 years old, when he is young, he is firmly on his father's side, only to find that the girl he likes is in his father's bed; the younger son Frank (Owen Klein Owen Kline), 12 years old, sees his parents' divorce as the end of the world and even starts drinking, becoming irreconcilable with his brother because he supports his mother. The bewilderment of a family of four is deeply embedded in the growth of the two children.
